Almost one year after my last post (sorry for my few followers), I found time to get back to this blog, with an object I had the pleasure to see (unfortunately not to visit) few years ago in Essen, Germany.

The University building, designed by SANAA is an extension of the Folkwang University of Arts’, whose main site is located in the city of Essen, few kilometers away. It is located directly on the UNESCO World Heritage site of Zollverein, a former coal extracting and transforming site.

The building itself consist in an almost cubical structure (35mx35mx34m), with 5 floors of various height. The openings look randomly arranged, but in reality their positions match both internal lightning and structural needs.

Architects SANAA  – Kazuyo Seijima (1956) & Ryue Nishizawa (1966)
Location Gelsenkirchener Str., Essen, Germany
Year 2010
Client Folkang Universität der Kunst
